Today was spent fixing the fuel problem that caused yesterday's engine misbehavior.
Woo-Hoo -- we had a bacteria growing in our fuel tank – the little buggers generally live on the tank’s floor, but yesterday’s lumpy seas caused them to take flight and get slurped up into the fuel lines – bam, no fuel flowing, no engine running.
Today Robby the fuel polisher came to our rescue – he cleaned the tank while passing the fuel through special filters to clear out the nasty buggers – by the time he was done, a filter the size of a Ben and Jerry’s store Ice cream container was covered with black sludge. Yecch. He also tracked down and cleaned out the “fuel line worms” that cut off the flow to the engine. Bottom line – the engine was happily purring when he left.
The cause – probably some bad fuel from last season sitting static in the tank over the winter – seems the buggers love still fuel with a little water in it – reproduce like randy bunnies.
Robby provided an additive that will “minimize” the possibility of a recurrence – nothing is ever “guaranteed” with a boat.
We’ll be up and off to West Palm first thing tomorrow, hopefully with no further mishaps!
